New Super Mario Bros. 2 offre des fondamentaux de plateforme solides avec un excellent design de niveau et des contrôles précis qui le rendent agréable à jouer. Le nouveau mode Coin Rush s'avère étonnamment addictif et prolonge considérablement la valeur de rejouabilité. Cependant, le jeu joue trop prudemment avec une formule trop familière, des visuels et musique recyclés des entrées précédentes, et un focus sur la collecte de pièces qui n'ajoute pas de profondeur significative. L'objectif d'un million de pièces semble plus laborieux que gratifiant. Le multijoueur fonctionne mais a des problèmes de caméra qui créent des perturbations. Idéal pour les fans de Mario cherchant plus de gameplay classique, mais ceux désirant l'innovation peuvent se sentir déçus par le manque d'idées fraîches au-delà du thème des pièces.

Mario 2 is far better than the original Mario DS. The original was fun with the traditional platform style of play that we have all come to know and enjoy throughout the Mario franchise, but Mario 2 has a lot more action and color. Some of the annoying things from the original were removed, like you can now save again and again after beating a tower or castle. The annoying chomping sounds from the piranha plants is also gone. In this game, you focus more on getting coins while also collecting the three big gold coins, finding secret levels, and beating Bowser. I've gotten a lot of extra lives just from all the coins I collected.
