There is indeed something special about the ZEISS look. Sharp to the edges even wide open, nice bokeh, and really has that 3D pop. Its lighter than expected and well-constructed, although I have no idea why its so thick. The close-focus stop-down issue was fixed in a firmware update, and the close focusing is a nice bonus. The biggest positive surprise for me is how much I love the 40mm focal length. Its totally a personal-preference thing but 35mm seemed just a little too wide and 50mm seemed just a little too narrow for the ideal normal lens. This ones field of view falls exactly between those others and really is the sweet spot. It also works great for video - manual focus is smooth and accurate, and auto-focus is fast and silent. In APS-C mode - which gives better 4k performance on the A7RIII - the lens is a still-normal-ish 60mm focal length and looks luscious.

Great image quality, lightweight, not as big as it looks although still chunky. The AF performance works quite well especially after the firmware update. This is the best option at 35mm/40mm for Sony today.

This lens definitely has the image quality and durability you expect from the Batis line. Its sharp with minimal distortions and great color. My favorite focal length has always been 35mm but Ive really come to appreciate the little bit of extra compression at 40mm for environmental portraits. As many have complained about, the aperture does stop down slightly near minimum focal distance. Your DoF is already so tiny at this point that I cant imagine why this is bothers anyone. The feature is meant to retain image sharpness.

First of all, the variable-aperture with close-focusing and Eye-AF issues have been fixed with a firmware update. The lens is fairly lightweight and build quality is excellent. The image quality is amazing. It has that special ZEISS 3D pop that comes from sharpness and their special-sauce micro contrast, plus smooth bokeh and wonderful color rendition. The 40mm focal length is ideal in my opinion for a walk-around lens. A little wider than 50, a little tighter than 35; exactly between them, actually.

The Loxia 35mm has been my favorite lens since its release. Having the option for auto-focus and a little extra reach for portraits with the Batis 40mm has been great. The slightly smaller aperture at close focus is a complete non-issue during practical use. Amazing lens with great color, sharpness, and lovely bokeh. Couldnt ask for much more.
