Le Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 245/40R18 97V XL est un pneu hiver sportif qui se distingue surtout sur routes sèches et mouillées par temps froid. Les essais et les conducteurs soulignent régulièrement son fort niveau de grip, ses distances de freinage courtes et sa direction précise, ce qui le rend bien adapté aux berlines et coupés puissants dans des hivers modérés. La motricité sur neige est en général très correcte avec un comportement prévisible et sécurisant. Pour un pneu hiver orienté performance, le bruit et le confort restent agréables, même si la carcasse rigide donne une sensation de fermeté. Il faut noter que l’adhérence sur glace n’est que moyenne face à des pneus nordiques spécialisés, ce qui peut être limitant pour ceux qui roulent souvent sur glace vive. Les tests indiquent aussi que la résistance à l’aquaplanage latéral et les performances en neige lourde ou neige fondue ne sont pas au tout premier plan. Certains utilisateurs trouvent enfin le comportement sur sol sec un peu moins incisif que celui de l’ancien Pilot Alpin 4. Pour les conducteurs qui roulent surtout sur routes froides, humides ou légèrement enneigées et recherchent un pneu durable au comportement dynamique, c’est néanmoins un choix très solide.

The tyres were used to drive from London to Lech in Austria in February when there was a lot of snow on the roads in the Alps. The Pilot Alpin 5 were on the front wheels of my car and 265/30 - 20 Pilot Alpin PA4 were on the rear axle. I would have preferred to have Pilot Alpin 5 on the rear axle but they are not available in this size.
